6284,19,13,'Injuries Impeding Stallworths Development...','In an article published early Friday, New Orleans Times-Picayune staffer Brian Allee-Walsh noted the Saints are preparing for another game without oft-injured receiver Donte Stallworth, whose big plays have been few and far between this season.
Stallworth, who was unable to practice all week, is doubtful for tomorrows game against the Redskins, because of a sprained left ankle.
He has missed three of the past four games, leaving a sizable hole in the teams passing game. A recent MRI exam showed no structural damage in the ankle, but the pain continues, and he remains on the sideline.
"I had the injury tag coming out of college but I only missed three games with a broken wrist," said Stallworth, a first-round draft pick out of Tennessee in 2002. "Now it seems like I got the injury bug, and Im trying to get rid of it. I guess when it rains, it pours.
"I feel like if Im 80 percent I can play, but Im not there yet. The doctors have said its up to me when I can start playing again. Ive played with sprained ankles before, but nothing like this. I know this -- Im tired of not playing."
Stallworth is joined on the teams injury report by wide receiver/ return specialist Michael Lewis (ankle), who was ruled out Friday.
Those injuries prompted head coach Jim Haslett to promote wide receiver Derrick Lewis from the practice squad to the 53-man roster Wednesday. Lewis is expected to be the fourth receiver against the Redskins, behind Joe Horn, Jerome Pathon and rookie Talman Gardner.
"Weve been very fortunate to have guys step up since Ive been here," offensive coordinator Mike McCarthy said. "Jerome has stepped up, and Talman has stepped up. Now, maybe Derrick Lewis will have an opportunity to step up."
Haslett and McCarthy had planned for Stallworth to build on last season, when he caught 42 passes for 594 yards and eight touchdowns.
