and still has yet to win back-to-back games. His 52.7 passer rating against the Steelers was the second-worst of his Browns career, surpassed on the low side only by a 43.4 effort against Baltimore in the second game this year.
His season rating is 77.1, which has slipped below Couchs 79.2.
Going into this weekends trip to Seattle, Holcomb has five games remaining to prove hes more than a career backup. As the 4-7 Browns battle for a playoff berth, Holcomb seems to be fighting for his professional future.
As tough as last weekend was with the Browns failing to score an offensive touchdown for the third time this season, Holcomb insisted Wednesday that he still has what it takes to be a winning quarterback.
"Ive never doubted that," Holcomb said. "You cant doubt that about yourself. Situations in football happen sometimes that you have no control over. You cant do anything about injuries. You just have to keep plugging. Things get hard sometimes and people tend to get on you every now and then."
Receiver Quincy Morgan said Holcomb is paying the price for the Browns reaching the red zone four times against Pittsburgh and kicking two field goals. The week before Holcomb threw three touchdown passes in a 44-6 victory over Arizona.
"I have a lot of confidence in the guy," Morgan said. "Its just a matter of executing and scoring touchdowns. Everybody knows if we score inside the 5, whether Holcomb throws a touchdown or not, theyre not going to say anything bad about him. Hes going to be the man again like he was last week. Thats a little ridiculous. But thats something everybody around here has to learn. To get people off your back, you just have to play good."
Holcomb said he might have been pressing on third-and-goal from the 7 in the third quarter when his pass intended for Andre Davis was intercepted.
"Thats one of those things you have to control emotionally," Holcomb said. "You get frustrated. Wed been down there three times and we got two field goals. You want to make something happen and that wasnt the time to make
