Lelie doesnt want to be handled with kid gloves.
"I dont think theyre putting enough pressure on me," Lelie said. "I love getting that opportunity, because if you make that play its going to really help your team and its going to really boost their confidence. So I like having the pressure all on me. ..."
Sounds great.
Unfortunately, Lelies willingness to play under pressure isnt translating into production and it doesnt change the fact Denver needs to find a more viable second receiver.
As Post beat man Patrick Saunders put it: "Veteran Rod Smith continues to be a playmaker, but [Lelie] has disappeared from the offense."
In an article published Monday, Saunders noted that at 33, Smith still goes through the same routine he did as a rookie in 1994. He makes sharp cuts even during warmups. He runs out every play and never misses an offseason workout.
One of his practice techniques is to set out pylons and run routes around them.
Smith tells Denvers young receivers to learn proper footwork now, so they will be around a long time. If they dont, their speed and skill will only take them so far.
But of course, Lelie is already well on his way to proving that corollary. ...
