National media have been a consistent sight at Paul Brown Stadium the past few weeks as Kitna has led the Bengals to five wins in their last six games.
"Your quarterback has to play well for your football team to play good," Kitna said. "If the quarterback is playing well and taking care of business and being smart with the ball, then you can have some mistakes in other areas and still be OK."
And as Goheen pointed out, Kitna is certainly playing well.
His 19 touchdown passes are tied for the lead in the AFC, equaling the number Peyton Manning has thrown for Indianapolis, and is just one off the NFL lead of 20 by Green Bays Brett Favre and Tampa Bays Brad Johnson. Hes on pace to finish with 28 touchdowns, the most by a Cincinnati quarterback since Jeff Blake had 28 in 1995. In the previous two seasons, the Bengals had thrown for just 29 touchdowns.
He has taken every snap from center this season -- the only quarterback in the league to do so -- and has completed 61.4 percent of his passes for 2,540 yards. Hes thrown just nine interceptions and has a 15-1 touchdown-to-interception ratio in Cincinnatis six wins. Coming into the season, Kitna had thrown just four more touchdowns (49) than interceptions (45) in his career and was thought to be more of a caretaker of the position while No. 1 draft choice Carson Palmer got ready to play.
"I dont care what anybody outside that locker room thinks, because none of them thought Id be playing now anyway in Week 12, and probably not a lot of you, if any of you thought Id be playing," Kitna said. "They thought that Carson Palmer would be here...."
One reason for Kitnas increased production is his familiarity with the system and those around him.
