So do the Bucs if theyre to make the playoffs. Thats why Cummings believes the decision to let Keyshawn Johnson go remains a dicey one.
It has left them without a regular contributor, especially on third down, and forced them to lean on the likes of Lee for big plays.
The Bucs got away with that arrangement once, but theres no guarantee theyll continue to do so. After all, defenses already are adjusting.
On Monday, for example, McCardell constantly drew coverage from New Yorks best cover corner. He also drew double coverage while inside the 20.
"It wasnt a big surprise," McCardell said of the coverages the Giants threw at him. "I sort of expected it. I mean, Ive seen that before a lot of times.
"The thing is, you just have to be up the challenge, and I was. Im always up to the challenge."
McCardell may be up to the challenge, but what about Lee and Joe Jurevicius, who is still recovering from a knee sprain?
Johnsons absence means they must meet new challenges as well. The same goes for Reggie Barlow, Karl Williams and tight ends Ken Dilger and Rickey Dudley.
In fact, the only member of the Bucs offense who wont have to adjust much to Johnsons absence is quarterback Brad Johnson.
"Ive been working with all these guys since training camp," Johnson said. "Its just a matter of believing in each other and working hard."
If thats all it is, then the Bucs should have no trouble staying on course. After all, they believe strongly in Lee after watching him step up Monday, and Lee is certainly not loafing.
Just as he did last week, he has spent extra time in the film room studying tape of his opponents, and he seems determined to take full advantage of the opportunity that Keyshawn Johnsons absence has presented.
