Its uncertain if Del Rio actually changed his mind.

Leftwich, who has committed 18 turnovers in eight starts, said he meets with Del Rio every Monday. He declined to answer when he was asked if Del Rio told him Monday he was about to be benched.

"What we talked about is between us," Leftwich said.

Del Rio said he didnt tell Leftwich he was making a switch and also said that owner Wayne Weaver had no input in the decision.

Del Rio said he didnt think he had shaken Leftwichs confidence with his public musing about the situation.

"There is nobody being affected other than having to answer questions," he said. "Were going to go out and play football on Sunday. Simeon Rice [of Tampa Bay] will have much more effect than anything that is said or written. I think thats the thing you have to separate."

Leftwich, meanwhile, didnt sound as if he has lost any confidence.

"You cant allow yourself to lose confidence in yourself. My team has a lot of confidence in me. Right now, Im the leader of this football team and Im still the quarterback," he said.

Leftwich conceded he didnt play well the last two games, a 10-3 loss to the Tennessee Titans and last weeks 13-10 loss to the New York Jets.

"Id be the first two say the last two games I didnt play great," Leftwich said. "I went out there [in practice] today and worked hard and Im going to continue to do that as long as Im here, 15 or 20 years. Im frustrated I didnt play well the last two games."

Leftwich took most of the snaps with the first team while Garrard did most of his work with the scout team.

Garrard said the coaches didnt talk to him about the situation and said it was a normal week for him. Despite Del Rios comments on Monday, Garrard said he didnt start thinking he was going to be the starter.

"Until somebody told me it was going to be my turn, I wasnt going to get my hopes up," he said.

Garrard was told 90 minutes before the season opener that he was going to be the No. 3 quarterback. He moved
