Bettis has 143 yards in his past three games, but his yards-per-carry is 2.9.
Opponents have been bringing an extra player into the box, but its as much to mess up the run as blitz Maddox and disrupt his timing.
"Theyre showing us that look before the ball is hiked and then theyre blitzing us a lot, saying, Were going to try to get to Tommy, were going to try to disrupt the passing game, and its been working to a certain extent," said Burress, who dropped a pass against the 49ers at the San Francisco 2. "But if we go out and hit a couple big ones, I think teams will jump back into it.
"I hope they keep doing it. It gives me a chance to work one-on-one. I dont have a problem beating one-on-one at all. Its just one of those things, when we get the opportunities we cant miss layups. We missed a couple last week. Those are big plays and those are the plays that put teams back in cover-2...."
Other notes of interest....
In case you havent been paying attention, Burress continues to struggle through a rather rocky 2003 season while Ward continues to flourish.
Why?
In an article published Monday, Pro Football Weekly reported that a source close to the team chalks up Wards success, in part, to winning the mental battle against defenders.
PFW added that Burress isnt nearly as good in this aspect of the game and sometimes lets himself allow other factors -- officiating calls that go against him, for instance -- affect his game.
Another Steelers source told the publication a shoulder injury could also be limiting Burress effectiveness, as he has somewhat limited range of motion in his right arm. The source believes the Steelers have an interesting decision in the offseason. Do they give Burress, who is signed through 2004, a contract extension?
The Steelers gave Ward a contract extension in 2001, and he is locked up through 2005.
If they do, will he be paid like the player who caught 78 passes for 1,325 yards and seven scores in 2002 or will his new deal reflect this years less-than-impressive totals?
Anybody wanna bet what Maddox
