buried the Bengals in the first half last week had they taken advantage of their generous starting field position. But the Chiefs were overwhelmed. Their offensive line, which poorly handled the aggressiveness of Cincinnatis defensive front, had its worst game of the season.
"Maybe it was a good lesson for us," tackle John Tait said. "We learned how important and precious those opportunities are. We squandered them and we cant get them back now."
But its not too late for the Chiefs to make some fixes. Theyve been effective using a no-huddle offense with Green calling the plays even in situations that werent late in a half.
The Chiefs used the hurry-up in the first quarter of last months victory against Buffalo and eventually were rewarded with Greens 67-yard touchdown pass to Dante Hall.
The reasons for using a hurry-up, no-huddle offense can be many and range from conserving time to preventing a defensive from substituting in order to get preferred personnel matchups.
The Chiefs used it against the Bills to make it harder for the defense to run its zone blitzes, which the Chiefs believed would give them trouble.
But offensive coordinator Al Saunders cautioned that the no-huddle would work only in limited situations.
"Youre trying to match your strengths with their weaknesses," Saunders said. "Its not the right thing to do all the time."
Many games begin with each probing the other and searching for tactics. The Chiefs have been good at making the adjustments, while not causing immediate problems for the defense.
"Offense is a game of execution and detail and rhythm," Saunders said. "Defense is a game of disruption. Generally, early in a game, its easier to disrupt than it is to have a rhythm. We prepare for what people have shown in the past or what we anticipate them doing. Then we adjust as we go along.
"Weve been able to adjust as the game progresses and become more and more productive as the game goes on. The problem comes if you couldnt adjust and go from feeling out what theyre doing defensively
