Teicher noted that for a team leading the NFL in scoring, the Chiefs arent having much early offensive success.
They scored on their first possession once, that coming in the season opener against San Diego. Otherwise, the first possessions have been an assortment of ugly drives that ended with a punt or interception.
The bigger problem for the Chiefs is that things usually havent been much better on second, third, fourth and, last week in Cincinnati, even fifth possessions.
These sluggish offensive starts hadnt hurt the Chiefs until last week, when they received the ball around midfield on their first five possessions against the Bengals.
The Chiefs managed one first down and no points and eventually were beaten 24-19.
"We havent had as much success this year on our first drive scoring as we had last season," Trent Green said. "We are producing points. If you go back to the game two weeks ago (against Cleveland), we scored on six of our first seven drives. The one that we didnt was our first drive.
"We have to find a way to get momentum early on."
So, a quick offensive start is a particular point of emphasis today when the Chiefs take on the Raiders at Arrowhead Stadium. Oakland figures to follow Cincinnatis blueprint: Use a power running game and play-action passes to keep the game close.
Such a plan will have more success if the Raiders keep the score close rather than face a huge early deficit.
"What happened last week is that going in there with the field position we had early, it just gave them more and more confidence by not getting some more early points out of that field position," Green said. "Their defense gained confidence and their team gained some confidence. Obviously, the atmosphere of the stadium changed a little bit. They got a little bit more rowdy and louder."
A similar scenario could unfold at Arrowhead today, minus the noise, of course. But the Raiders have some offensive momentum for the first time this season, increasing the urgency for the Chiefs to score some early points.
