What is Fantasy Football

In its simplest form, the idea of fantasy sports is no different than any other game or contest that involves testing your knowledge against a group of friends. Fantasy sports was created over 20 years ago when a group of baseball fans took the bragging rights of — "I know more about the game than you do" — to a game level by creating rules and scoring systems to define what "best" was.

Fantasy football has become the most popular of all fantasy sports in recent years, mostly because it is one of the easier fantasy games to play. A group of friends — known as team "owners" — get together at the beginning of the football season and select a roster of NFL players with the idea of putting together the team that puts up the best statistics each week. Fantasy football contests can be found in many places on the web. They range from contests and leagues that are a total waste of time to some of the most challenging you can find.

The two players, who are very good friends, spent the last seven years on the same teams with the New York Jets, Miami Dolphins and a game with the Ravens.

"They could relate to each other," quarterbacks/receivers coach David Shaw said. "Dedric helped Ray understand a couple of things because he would say Hey, its like whatever they did in the past. So his learning curve was a little quicker."

For Lucas, signing with the Ravens, even if his stint lasts less than a half a season, rejuvenated him. Lucas said he didnt do much when he was out of football the first nine weeks other than lie in bed and work out.

"I just went crazy and got depressed," said Lucas, a six-year veteran who started six games for the Dolphins last year. "Then I went more crazy and got more depressed. It was a tough time for me.

"Sometimes I didnt even get out of the bed. But sometimes, Id sleep late, go to the gym, come back home, get back in the bed and wait for my kids to get home. No talking on the phone."

The Ravens may choose to re-sign Lucas if Redman, an unrestricted free agent at the end of the season, signs with another team.

According to Pro Football Weekly, the Ravens have never been sold on the talents of Redman, and that never was more apparent than when head Billick chose Wright, not Redman, to replace Boller.

A free agent after this season, Redman is not expected to return to Baltimore in 2004. The former Louisville star looked tentative in both of his appearances this season, particularly in Baltimores 33-22 loss to St. Louis in Week 10, when he threw two interceptions and made poor decision after poor decision.

PFW added that much has been made of Wrights arm strength relative to Redmans. Wright has a strong arm, whereas Redman can have trouble throwing the out. But a source familiar
