problems out there that well have to straighten out [today]."','11/22/2003','8:05:00 PM','Saturday',652 6222,27,12,'Garcia Ready To Serve As No. 2 Behind Rattay...','According to San Jose Mercury News staff writer Dennis Georgatos, Jeff Garcias recovery from a sprained left ankle has progressed to the point where hell serve as the No. 2 quarterback tomorrow behind Tim Rattay, head coach Dennis Erickson said Friday.
Rattay has helped the 49ers win two consecutive games in place of Garcia, who suffered the injury against Arizona. Rattay will try to lead the 49ers to their first road win in five tries this season.
Garcia, the 49ers No. 3 quarterback the past two games, seems to have regained much of his mobility and has been able to get in quite a bit of practice, Erickson said.
"Right now, our thought is for him to be the backup to Tim," Erickson said. "Hes moving around OK."
Erickson has said that Garcia would reclaim the No. 1 job when fully healthy. The coach declined to discuss the status of Rattay or Garcia beyond Sunday. ...

ESPN.com insider Len Pasquarelli suggested Friday that a handful of teams will be in the market for a veteran quarterback during the offseason, and some have begun studying tape of Garcia.
While Erickson has reiterated that Garcia will regain his starting spot once he is fully recovered from a high ankle sprain, there is a suspicion the 49ers could stick with Rattay if the youngster continues to play well. And given Garcias contract status for 04 -- when San Francisco must pay him a base salary commensurate to the "franchise" label -- he could be released if his deal isnt reworked.
It figures to be an active market for some veteran quarterbacks, and onetime starters, like Mark Brunell, Kurt Warner and Brian Griese. Its unlikely Garcia will be added to that list, but the teams in dire need of a starter arent going to wait to find out. ...
