and Brady arent about to single him out. When asked about Graham yesterday, Belichick responded by saying the entire offense has had consistency problems.
Graham certainly possesses impressive physical tools, as his size, height and speed are exceptional for a tight end. On the other hand, he seems to lack some of the instinctive football ability that is the hallmark of Belichick-Scott Pioli draft picks.
At least Graham is realistic.
"If the ball hits my hands Im supposed to catch it," said Graham. "Those were perfect balls. I have to catch them. ..."
For what its worth, the injuries to Brown and Givens do not appear to be serious. Had they been, the Patriots could have placed one or both on injured reserve rather than doing so with fullback Fred McCrary -- whose torn hamstring would not have kept him sidelined the rest of the season -- and leaving themselves shorthanded in the backfield.
Belichick said rookie defensive lineman Dan Klecko could see more time at fullback, along with tailback/fullback Patrick Pass. Larry Centers is eligible to return in a few weeks, so the Klecko-Pass tandem might have to hold down the fort temporarily.
Its a good thing, then, that the Patriots are going up against the leagues 29th-ranked run defense. If they get Antowain Smith and Faulk -- and perhaps even Mike Cloud -- going, the passing game could be an afterthought
According to the Globe, even though practices are closed to the media, it was clear that, offensively, things werent going as smoothly as usual.
"We could go out there and run the most basic play in our offense, [but] we have some new guys doing it," Belichick said. "Theres a little bit of timing execution there that maybe isnt quite as good as what it would be in a different situation or a different week. Im not saying its been a bad week, but there have been some things that werent very. ... some things were good on Wednesday, some things werent.
