What is Fantasy Football

In its simplest form, the idea of fantasy sports is no different than any other game or contest that involves testing your knowledge against a group of friends. Fantasy sports was created over 20 years ago when a group of baseball fans took the bragging rights of — "I know more about the game than you do" — to a game level by creating rules and scoring systems to define what "best" was.

Fantasy football has become the most popular of all fantasy sports in recent years, mostly because it is one of the easier fantasy games to play. A group of friends — known as team "owners" — get together at the beginning of the football season and select a roster of NFL players with the idea of putting together the team that puts up the best statistics each week. Fantasy football contests can be found in many places on the web. They range from contests and leagues that are a total waste of time to some of the most challenging you can find.

his production in the last two seasons. But in the last five games he has just six catches for 31 yards and a touchdown.

"Weve been running the ball so good we havent really had to throw it that much," Franks said. "You dont really need to gripe right now."

Franks wasnt aware that he ranked as low as 12th in receiving yards (171) among tight ends in the NFC. Jeremy Shockey of the New York Giants, the leader with 535, might miss a month or more with knee-ligament damage suffered in Week 9.

If Shockey can return, he figures to be a shoo-in for one of the two Pro Bowl berths in the NFC. The other berth would be up for grabs because almost all the elite tight ends play in the AFC.

"I only have 20 balls; thats why Im 12th," Franks said. "Ive kind of got to forget about that right now and see what happens at the end. Its not looking good."

Although hampered by a thigh injury for weeks, Franks hasnt missed any time. But after getting 28 passes thrown to him in the first seven games, he has seen just one in the last three.

On average, 6.7 passes had gone to the tight ends in the first seven weeks, more than the full-season averages of 6.6 in 2000, 4.6 in 01 and 5.9 in 02.

The situation reached its nadir for the tight ends Sunday in Tampa Bay when no passes came their way. Since 1993, the second year of the West Coast offense in Green Bay, there has been only one other game (Atlanta, 01) in which the tight ends didnt get a pass.

"It has to be better," Sherman said. "The balls that are being thrown are being spread around to a lot of different receivers."

For the season, Franks has had 29 passes, Wesley Walls has had 13 and David Martin has had 10. Walls, with eight receptions for 100 yards, is headed for a career low. Martin has caught eight for 61.

When Franks made the Pro Bowl in 01, he ranked just eighth in yards (322) among tight ends in the NFC but was first in touchdowns (nine). Last year, he was fourth in yards (442) and first again in touchdowns (seven).

Now he isnt gaining yards or scoring touchdowns,
