In an article published earlier today, New York Newsday beat man Neil Best reminded readers that when Fassel originally announced Shockeys injury Nov. 10, the estimate was that he would be out six to eight weeks. Shockey asked not to be placed on injured reserve, though, and two days later, Fassel said Shockey had begun to improve and might miss as few as three weeks.
"Not everybody is the same," Fassel said Friday. "Its not an exact science. ... He hates that training room. He likes that football field."
The question is whether Shockey can do long-term damage to his posterior cruciate ligament. Shockey also has been playing with a sore right foot for most of the season. Several veterans have expressed concern about rushing Shockey back.
Fassel said trainer Ronnie Barnes and team doctors are "fine with it" as long as Shockey takes it easy as he works back into game shape and is honest about how he feels.
"It certainly would be a big plus for us if we could get him back," Kerry Collins said. "I just dont want him to come back too early. Then he could really do some damage and itd be kind of stupid to do that.
"You have to be smart about it. ... But hes hard to keep off the field. He wants to be out there. Thats what hes all about."
The offense was struggling to score even with Shockey, but his absence as both a receiver and blocker was felt against the Eagles. Marcellus Rivers had three catches, all after the outcome had been determined. Rivers and fullback Jim Finn failed to block adequately for a run on fourth-and-goal from the 1.
Even if Shockey does not play Monday, he likely will play against the Bills Nov. 30, Fassel said. He said the team would benefit from his energy and attitude. Shockey was an enthusiastic cheerleader during last weeks loss to the Eagles.
