to be (an all) out player on every down? Thats never going to happen. But I dont see as many plays where he flat-out does nothing. Thats subsided."
Hoge, a former Pittsburgh Steelers fullback, has ripped Moss several times in the past, most notably in October 2000 for taking plays off and not making a "championship effort." But Hoge said he has watched most of the Vikings games this season and is seeing a more consistent effort from the Vikings star receiver.
"The games theyve lost, teams have done a good job, and hes continued to play," Hoge said. "I think it shows his development. ... I still see a guy trying to help his team and make some plays. As long as that persists, theyll be fine."
Although he is second in the NFL in catches (67) and receiving yards (1,023), Moss was noticeably absent on the field and stat sheet last Sunday in Oakland. Moss caught just four passes for 25 yards, and he was the intended target on only four other passes. Afterward, asked about not having any second-half receptions, Moss said, "Thats not my fault. Thats the coaches fault to get me the ball."
But as Jensen suggested, perhaps the blame was misguided. The Raiders aggressively defended Moss and exposed another Vikings vulnerability: the lack of a reliable No. 2 receiver. Kelly Campbell gained 115 yards on four catches, fulfilling his role as a downfield threat. But veteran DWayne Bates and rookie Nate Burleson combined for four receptions and 50 yards.
"Were kind of No. 2 by committee right now, and thats a little tough," offensive coordinator Scott Linehan said. "Certainly, youd like to have a one-two punch and then a third and a fourth. But thats not where were at. Its just the reality of the situation. But were lucky to have the depth and different styles of receivers that we have."
