The early success isnt entirely unexpected from Johnson, the third overall pick in the draft who leads the team with 46 catches and 711 yards. His three touchdowns receiving are tied with Corey Bradford for the team lead.
More of a surprise has been fourth-round pick Davis, the 101st selection who struggled throughout his Louisiana State career to win a starting job. He is the leagues rookie leader with 655 yards rushing, which puts him 18th overall although he only has five starts.
"Were very excited about both of them, about what theyve done to this point and about what their capabilities are in the future," head coach Dom Capers said, while declining to offer his early take on rookie of the year.
"Those types of honors always take care of themselves. The best thing about both of those guys is they dont get caught up in all of that. They come in, give you a good days work and do what it takes to get better."
Of course, there are other rookies competing for attention, such as Cardinals receiver Anquan Boldin and perhaps Jaguars quarterback Byron Leftwich if he gets hot down the stretch.
For his part, Johnson said hes still concentrating on learning the NFL and trying to improve the Texans.
"I think my biggest thing coming into the league was not to put too much pressure on myself," Johnson said. "Im not trying to go out there and be the hero. Im just playing and letting the plays come to me."
Last week, the Bills decided to attack Davis, who has three 100-yard rushing games, yet he still accounted for 101 total yards while Johnson had 122 yards receiving. Factoring out the stat-skewing final play when Johnson took a 34-yard rushing loss as he sprinted for a safety to kill the clock in Houstons 12-10 victory, the two rookies accounted for 80 percent of the offense.
