"I feel better today than I did yesterday, and Im going to stay here all evening," Ramsey said. "Were going to try a bunch of things to see if we can make it feel better."

If Ramsey cant play, Tim Hasselbeck will make his first NFL start Sunday night at Miami. Hasselbeck would become the 15th quarterback to start for the Redskins in 11 seasons.

"Tim knows what to do," head coach Steve Spurrier said. "He can catch it and hand it off and throw it. I think Tim will play well if hes our quarterback this week."

Spurrier did not say when he will make a decision. If he feels Ramsey might not play, he will have to promote rookie Gibran Hamdan from the practice squad no later than Saturday to have a backup ready. Ramsey and Hasselbeck are the only quarterbacks on the active roster.

Ramsey indicated that Fridays practice would be the most telling.

"Id really like to practice tomorrow if Im going to be able to play on Sunday," he said.','11/20/2003','2:35:00 PM','Thursday',612 6182,1,12,'Emmitt Upgraded; Could Back Up Shipp...','According to Associated Press sports writer Bob Baum, Emmitt Smith was upgraded to questionable for Sundays game against St. Louis after making it through a second day of practice Thursday.

"Im getting back healthy and feeling pretty good about where Im at," Smith said, "and I look forward to getting back on the football field."

Smith has been sidelined since breaking his left shoulder blade against the Cowboys on Oct. 5. Thursdays practice was his first in full pads since the injury.

"I had the shoulder pads on, got banged around a little bit," he said. "I feel like my condition is not too bad. Of course I need to get a lot more game kind of reps to really assess where Im at, but I feel pretty good."

Head coach Dave McGinnis said after the practice that he decided to upgrade Smith from doubtful.

"That means 50-50, thats pretty good odds isnt it?" McGinnis said. "Hes come along.
