Pro Football Weekly reminded readers that Gannon underwent surgery for a torn labrum last week and faces a lengthy rehabilitation process.
He will be 38 years old when next season starts, and his base salary jumps from $1 million to $7 million. On top of all that, the Raiders figure to be facing a rebuilding project of sorts, meaning Gannon could be relying on some new blockers and receivers.
If the Raiders spend a high draft pick on a quarterback and/or want to see what they have in Tuiasosopo, an Al Davis favorite, next season, some close to the team believe they may not be all that excited about bringing Gannon back, at least not at his projected price tag.
But Gannon signed a six-year, $54 million extension back in the summer of 2002 and doesnt figure to want to surrender much of the money that he feels is owed to him, which could create an interesting dilemma in the spring.','11/20/2003','12:40:00 PM','Thursday',609 6179,1,12,'Smith Hits Practice Field, But Remains Doubtful...','As reported by Associated Press sports writer Bob Baum, Emmitt Smith practiced Wednesday for the first time since breaking his left shoulder blade nearly seven weeks ago.
"He looked pretty good. Well put him in pads [today] and see where he is," head coach Dave McGinnis said.
McGinnis said Smith remains listed as doubtful for Sundays game against St. Louis. The team certainly could use him, with running back Marcel Shipp so bruised and battered he couldnt practice Wednesday.
Smith wasnt saying much about his return.
"Im still rehabbing," he said as he walked past reporters on his way off the field. "I dont have any answers yet. All I did was run, and youve seen me run before, right?"
Smith said he would have more to say after todays practice.
"He got about the number of reps that we thought that he was going to," McGinnis said. "We had it pretty well programmed out and kept asking how he was doing. Were going to be very smart with him. He hasnt had
