But as Thompson pointed out, there are several reasons to suggest the Raiders also should let Tuiasosopo sling it.
The Lions pass defense is even worse than their run defense. Detroit is 24th in the NFL in passing yards allowed per game (226.3).
Also, Tuiasosopo has the ability to make plays with his feet, whether scrambling out of the pocket or throwing on the run. Hes at his best in freelance mode.
While there is more potential for him to make mistakes while improvising, there also is more potential for him to make plays. And a play-maker is something the Raiders sorely need, the jolt theyve been waiting for during a disastrous 2-5 start.
"Were hoping anything can rejuvenate us at this point," Brown said. "The most important thing is going to be his enthusiasm. Hes a high-fiving, pat-you-on-the-back type guy.
"We sort of go about things sort of methodically around here, because weve done it so long. If theres a good play, we expect to make good plays. With this guy, if he makes a good throw, the whole world knows he made a good throw because hes excited about it. And thats a good thing."
A couple of stats of interest....
As noted by Pro Football Weekly, in Gannons last 10 quarters, he has completed only five passes each to Jerry Rice and Brown. In two quarters of play versus the Chiefs, Tuiasosopo hit Rice five times and Brown three.
Its also worth noting the Raiders have scored just two touchdowns in the last 11 quarters. One of those scoring drives covered only 24 yards following a fumble recovery against the Browns.
