The linebackers are led by Zach Thomas, there are three veteran defensive backs in Sammy Knight, Terrell Buckley and Sam Madison, and the AFCs interceptions leader, Patrick Surtain. The Dolphins may be without Thomas and Surtain, who are both questionable for the game, with ankle and groin injuries, respectively, but the Ravens are wary nonetheless.
"Theyre great across the board," Heap said. "Were not going to go up against a better team, especially on paper. Theyve got all the physical attributes and all the stats, too. Theyve got a lot of great players, the front four, the two ends. ... You look at that, and then you look at their secondary from Surtain and Madison. Theyre tough and were going to have to be ready for that."
Most teams have adjusted their defense to try to stop Ravens running back Jamal Lewis, who has Eric Dickersons single-season rushing record in his sights. The majority have put eight or even nine defenders at the line of scrimmage, daring rookie quarterback Kyle Boller to beat them with the Ravens drop-prone wide receivers. Now, even with Boller out and Wright, who has started only five games, in, the profile of the Ravens offense hasnt changed much.
But head coach Brian Billick expects little change from the Dolphins.
"I cant imagine them changing a whole lot," Billick said. "Whatever plan they have to come in against us, their package is very base. When you present a package like Miami to your players, it is good news and bad news. The good news is they dont do a lot, so there is only so much you have to look at. The bad news is they dont do a whole lot because they dont have to, because they are pretty good."
The matchup of Taylor and left tackle Jonathan Ogden, both Pro Bowl players, will be key.
