6157,21,11,'Relaxed, More Confident Conway Expects To Come On...','According to New York Newsday staff writer Bob Herzog, this wasnt the Curtis Conway the Jets thought they were getting. They thought they had a 10-year veteran receiver with size, speed and savvy. But his routes were imprecise. He didnt get open much. He dropped passes.
"He was pressing so much. He wanted so badly to do great," receivers coach Mike Canales said Friday. "You push the press button and suddenly youre not the guy you were for eight or nine years."
So Conway -- signed to replace the departed Laveranues Coles -- became an afterthought as a target, first for Vinny Testaverde, then for Chad Pennington.
"I know the reason I struggled. I was pressing," Conway said after Fridays indoor practice in preparation for todays game in Indianapolis against the high-scoring Colts. "I was worried about making mistakes. Id go into a game trying to be perfect."
Or as Herzog suggested: "Thinking too much?"
"You hit it right on the head," Conway said. "Football has always been a reaction game for me. Instead, I was thinking about too many things. Chad, then Vinny, then Chad. Where was I supposed to be? I was uncomfortable. Then it was brought to my attention."
A couple of weeks ago, head coach Herman Edwards approached Conway and pointed out that he was trying too hard. "He told me to be relaxed and just be Curtis Conway," the former Bears and Chargers receiver said. "Dont take the whole load on you."
With a renewed attitude, Conway had four catches last week, including a crucial third-down completion in overtime that helped set up the winning field goal. Now Wayne Chrebet is out for the season after yet another concussion. Conway expects to be even more involved in the offense this week as Pennington looks for occasional alternatives to Santana Moss.
"You let the system use your guys and use their talents," Pennington said.
