to be the focal point of the ground game. It gets interesting after that. Suggs was a big-play performer with a nose for the end zone at Virginia Tech. White has shown an ability to make plays when given the opportunity, and Jackson might the most-improved player on the roster.
Suggs is certain to be with the team in 2004, but the same cant be said of Jackson and White. Jackson has one year left on a cap-friendly contract that calls for a $644,000 base salary, while White has a deal that carries through the 2006 season and has an $800,000 base salary next year.
At this time, Jacksons value has never been higher. He credits shaking the effects of a serious ankle injury that hindered him in 2001 and 2002, along with a personal workout regimen at his Florida home that he swears has transformed his career.
"Before I got back here for two-a-days, working out I knew I was going to be a step ahead of everybody else," Jackson said. "The way I work out. ... Im in the sunshine. Most of the guys are up here in the cold weather. They cant go outside. Im just taking advantage of it."
Jackson has a long working relationship with Ed Smith, a trainer he met while attending Glades Central High School in Belle Glade, Fla. Although the Browns give Jackson a workout regimen to follow during the offseason, he rarely puts it to use.
"I do my own thing," Jackson said. "They give me a list, but when Im with [Smith], I do his thing. Its hot down there. Im working out every day. I love being here right now. When this season is over, Im going to hate going home. He kills me. He gets me ready."
Jackson has been adamant about remaining at his Florida home to conduct offseason workouts. In opting against working out under team supervision, Jackson has turned his back on weekly paychecks of an estimated $1,000 players receive during the offseason.
"As far as Im concerned, they can keep their money," Jackson said. "If they offered me a hundred thousand dollars to stay up here to work out, Im going back home to work out."
