At least two Saints players arent overjoyed about the new AstroPlay field at the Superdome.
Place-kicker John Carney and punter Mitch Berger stand to lose distance on kicks and punts because the new surface is thicker, deeper and softer than the old AstroTurf field.
Haslett said Carney probably will lose about 3 yards of distance on field goals.
"AstroTurf is a very clean surface where there is no drag and your foot comes through the ball," Carney said. "This surface, especially with the rubber, creates drag on your cleat as it comes through the ball. So its a little trickier to kick off of than AstroTurf, and at times trickier to kick off of than regular grass."
Haslett has instructed him to get to the Superdome early Sunday so he can gauge his distance on field-goal attempts.
"The first one he kicked (at Tuesdays practice), the rubber came flying out," Haslett said. "He told me he was good from the 32 (-yard line). Hes been good from the 35, so we lost yards on field goals."
Still, Carney said the benefits of the new turf far outweigh the adjustments that he and Berger will have to make.
"For the most part, this is a much better surface for the entire team, for the health of the team," Carney said. "This is something that the kickers and punters are going to have to adjust to."
