In a win over the Lions Oct. 26 at Soldier Field, Gage caught a 21-yard TD pass and set up a field goal with a leaping 37-yard reception. One week later he had catches of 28 and 24 yards in a victory over the Chargers.
"It just all starts with getting that opportunity to get some plays," Gage said. "Once you get out there, you dont want to let your teammates down and you want to prove to everybody that you can play at this level, and thats what its all about.
"I feel that they brought me in here to make plays and thats what Im here to do, so every chance I get Im going to go up and try to make a play if I can."
While Gage leads the team with a 21.7 yards per catch average, the Bears offense ranks last in the NFL in total yards, 31st in passing, 30th in first downs and 29th in scoring.
Veterans Chris Chandler (66.7) and Kordell Stewart (56.0) rank 14th and 17th in the NFC in quarterback rating, respectively. Both have thrown three more interceptions than touchdowns while combining to average just 5.51 yards per pass attempt.
"For the most part, we just havent connected in our passing game," Jauron said. "We havent gotten into a rhythm. In the back-to-back games that we won, I felt like we were progressing. We were throwing the ball better, we were getting it out on rhythm. Even in the Seattle game I thought we had opportunities for big plays.
"We need bigger chunks of yards. Weve got to create more things down the field in the passing game, and to do that, weve got to protect the quarterback. So thats got to be there first and then weve got to stretch the field a little more than we have."
Booker emerged as the Bears go-to receiver in 2001-02, recording the two most prolific receiving seasons in team history with 100 and 97 catches.
But the fifth-year pro has been a non-factor this season, catching four passes for 36 yards in last Sundays loss in Detroit after missing the three previous games with a sprained ankle.
