the injured Michael Bennett, emerging at last from the pigeon hole he long ago tumbled into.
"This league is a lot about opportunities," Williams said, "You always prepare for when youre going to get one. I was a third-round draft pick [in 1996], so I never thought was being kept around just for special teams. Youve got to see something else in someone to do that. So I always practiced like I would get a chance."
But in his first five seasons, Williams accumulated a total of 316 rushing yards.
"I was never fortunate to have a lot of opportunities," Williams said. "And when I did have one, I was always injured."
Released by the Vikings in 2001, Williams returned in 2002 when Tice envisioned him as a third-down/short-yardage back. Williams proved a wise pickup, rushing for 414 yards and 11 touchdowns while also catching 27 passes for 251 yards.
Somewhat ironically, Williams filled his role so well last season that the Vikings didnt want to promote him to starter.
They had little choice when Doug Chapman was sidelined by a series of injuries and Onterrio Smith succumbed to rookie mistakes. They have not been disappointed. Last Sunday, his versatility was on full display: He rushed for 45 yards while catching 11 passes for 126 yards and two touchdowns in a 42-28 loss at San Diego.
"He has evolved himself from being a productive contributor to being a featured player on an NFL team," running backs coach Dean Dalton said.
Seifert added: "Driven by his years on the sidelines, Williams runs with a ferocity that belies his 205-pound frame. Earlier this season, he bowled over Denver safety Kenoy Kennedy, one of the NFLs biggest hitters, on his way to a 9-yard scamper. And with 17 third-down conversions -- including a 4-for-4 mark on third-and-1 -- he is the Vikings most reliable option in critical situations."
