knows it. Rivers knows it.
In his third season, Rivers toughness, his attitude and his effort are all better, according to Fassel. Now, he is starting for the injured Jeremy Shockey.
"Im calm," said Rivers, who will play in Philadelphia, despite hurting his throat and shoulder last Sunday. "Im just focusing on doing my job, doing my assignments to help this team get a victory because our season is so much in limbo."
Rivers isnt Shockey. He doesnt have Shockeys speed and is not as good a blocker. Fassel even admitted yesterday that the passing game will be slightly altered because Shockey is out.
Rivers will be important Sunday. He must be a presence in the middle of the Eagles secondary to somewhat ease the pressure for the outside receivers. In his three years, Rivers owns 46 receptions. This season alone, Shockey has 48.
"He has really grown up in the years that he has been here," Amani Toomer said. "He is turning into a player that a lot of people can count on. ... Im anxious to see how he is going to react to a featured role."
Given the 25-year-old Rivers approach, you half expect to see him come out in a gray business suit instead of his No. 83 Sunday. He looks at starting on Sunday as an opportunity that occurs in any business.
"It is just like working for IBM," Rivers said.
For Kerry Collins, having Shockey sidelined changes the offense slightly.
"It is a little bit slower," Collins said. "[Shockey] obviously brings a lot of speed to our offense. As far as what we do, we are not going to change-up much. We are still going to call the same plays."
Rivers teammates have confidence in him. As Toomer pointed out, it is not like Rivers is a rookie.
"His preparation, you can tell he knows exactly what he is doing," Toomer said. "Sometimes, with rookies, they dont know exactly know what they are doing so now there is no question [he knows what he is doing]. Now, when Marcellus comes in there is no one saying, Uh, oh, this guy is in the game. Everybody knows he is capable."
