In an article published Monday, PFW noted the promotion from third string to second string may not sound like much, especially behind Priest Holmes, but the Chiefs are hoping it means a lot for first-round pick Larry Johnson, who moved ahead of Derrick Blaylock last week.
"When I see him on the practice field running against our defense, he shows those intrinsic talents that are hard to coach," Vermeil said in explaining Johnsons move up the depth chart. "Sooner or later, if we need him, I want him to have the confidence that hes ready to go."
Vermeil added that, as coaches, you "expect a 21- or 22-year-old kid to be a lot more ready to handle the adversity when a first-round pick is not as active as you would like him to be," and that Johnson has done just "all right" in dealing with his lack of contribution.
One key for Johnson, who had been activated for just one game prior to the promotion, is that he will be getting reps with the Chiefs offense now instead of running the oppositions plays as part of the scout team. ...
