"We have probably one of the best young groups of receivers in the NFL that comes out ready to play week in and week out," McNair said.
Offensive coordinator Mike Heimerdinger agrees. In fact, the coach attributes a great deal of McNairs success to the emergence of Bennett and McCareins.
"[McNair] was probably just as consistent last year," Heimerdinger said. "His receivers are more experienced. ... Last year, he started out pretty good. Then, when Kevin Dyson got hurt, he lost a guy with experience. So Drew Bennett played more. Justin McCareins was really a rookie because he was hurt his whole first year."
According to Pro Football Weekly, last years playing time helped both wide receivers, but particularly Bennett, who spent much of his college career at quarterback. McCareins and Bennett -- currently sidelined by an injured calf -- have combined for 777 yards, nearly matching last years total of 779 yards.
However, Heimerdinger says that the most integral component to his injury-prone quarterbacks best season has been his health.
"A couple of years ago, he was playing pretty good in the beginning," the coach explained. "And then the back went out, and so we had to start all over again. Being healthy is the biggest thing."
That said, Heimerdinger points out that McNair plays well even when hes hurt. "He concentrates better. I think people that say he cant make it, and hes not going to play -- he proves to them that he can."
McNair plays so well when injured that Heimerdinger joked, "If hes not hurt, were going to take him out and hit him with a baseball bat."
Also of interest. ...
Calico is tied for the NFL rookie lead in TDs with four, and with Bennett out hell get good chances against Jacksonville.
And finally. ...
According to the Sports XChange, Eddie George is being downsized, but has a good history against the Jaguars -- 1,193 yards and 10 TDs. He scored two TDs against them in a meeting a month ago.','11/14/2003','1:05:00 AM','Friday',550
