"Were at a point anything less than what were doing now is not even acceptable because of the job weve done consistently last year and this year," McNair said. "I think its going to help us in the long run to open up a lot of different things offensively in the run game and also improve the passing game."
McNair leads the NFL in average gain with 8.55 yards per completion, and hes completing 65.9 percent of his passes. Hes even better on third down, completing 70 percent with seven touchdowns and a 126.6 passer rating.
He showed off his touch last weekend on the opening drive of the Titans victory over Miami. On third-and-9, McNair dropped back and threw the ball to Derrick Mason even though three Dolphins had him covered. But McNair placed the ball where only Mason could catch it, which he did by diving for a 46-yard gain.
The Jacksonville Jaguars on Sunday get their second chance in a month to try to slow the Titans, and head coach Jack Del Rio said McNair has made their offense much more explosive.
"And theyve given him a lot more opportunities," Del Rio said. "The receivers have made some nice plays for him,"
The receiving corps gives McNair more options than hes ever had with the Titans. Receivers make up four of their top five pass-catchers led by Mason, Justin McCareins, tight end Erron Kinney, Drew Bennett and Tyrone Calico. Thats a big change from previous seasons, when running backs and tight ends were McNairs most frequent targets.
Mason already has 50 receptions for 690 yards, with 33 of those catches going for first downs. He is averaging 13.8 yards a reception, one of five Titans whose average catch is in double figures.
Hes on track to become the first receiver in franchise history with 1,000 yards or more receiving in three straight seasons. He needs only 20 catches to match Haywood Jeffires as the only receivers with 70 or more receptions in three straight seasons.
