As noted by the Delaware County Times, with 11 catches for 118 yards this season, the rookies numbers dont leap off the page. But Smith is getting more snaps and making more of an impression with each passing week.
Believe it or not, Smith has been the team leader in receiving yards in three of the last four games, and Philadelphia prevailed in all three. It may say a lot about the teams underachieving wide receivers, but it also says something about Smiths growing role within the offense.
"To lead the team in receiving yards isnt really a focus of mine," Smith said. "If it happens, it happens, but Im just happy Donovan [McNabb] is finding me.
"The quarterback and offensive coordinator are getting confidence in me, so if I can make one big play, then maybe I can make two and so on."
Smith had a career-high four catches against the Washington Redskins Oct. 5 and three more last weekend against the Jets. And he hauled in a short toss from McNabb and then ran over Giants safety Omar Stoutmire for a career-long 25-yard gain that set up the Eagles only offensive touchdown in a 14-10 win.
But Smith doesnt need to look at the statistics to know that hes making strides.
"I can tell at the end of a game whether I played well," he said. "I dont need to look at the stats.
