Mary Kay Cabot. "I think Ill be ready by camp, but shoulders are a different thing."
The Browns are keeping a close watch on Holcomb because theyre counting on him to back up Jeff Garcia. Rookie Luke McCown, their fourth-round pick, is slated to be the No. 3.
But the Browns know all too well just how important a backup is. Last season, Holcomb suffered a broken fibula in Week 3 and was replaced by Tim Couch, who later suffered a sprained thumb. Both started eight games.
Garcia, 34, missed some time last season with an ankle injury while playing for San Francisco and according to Cabot, is in "maintenance mode" with a bulging disk in his lower back.
"Were fully expecting Kelly to be ready by training camp and to be ready to go if we need him," said head coach Butch Davis.
Holcomb expressed no feelings one way or the other on the acquisition of Garcia.
"Its not my job to feel any way," he said. "Its happened, its done and what can you do about it but try to get better and compete?"
Also in Cleveland. ... Tight end Steve Heiden, who started the first nine games for the Cleveland Browns in 2003 before suffering an ankle injury, agreed to a three-year contract extension on Wednesday.
Financial terms were not disclosed for Heiden, who is under contract through the 2007 season.
Heiden caught 18 passes for 134 yards before suffering the ankle injury on November 9 at Kansas City that ended his season. He has played 67 NFL games, starting 28, and caught 49 passes for 326 yards and three touchdowns.
"We want people like Steve with the Cleveland Browns," Davis said. "He is a versatile and talented veteran who has proven himself as both a starting tight end and H-back."
Heiden will probably be used as an H-back and a second tight end since the Browns selected Miami tight end Kellen Winslow in the first round of the April draft. ...
In Cincinnati. ... According to Cincinnati Enquirer staffer Mark Curnutte,
