"Right now we dont have the room to sign the draft picks and we have that coming up pretty quick, you know," Adams said. "Im sitting here now it looks to me like his agent doesnt want him to play for us. We offered him a pretty good deal, but he wouldnt take it.
"So we wont have much choice. [George] is a leader, weve won a lot of games with him, hes a good guy to have on the team and you hate to lose a guy like that, but we have to look at the overall situation."
And health is part of that overall picture.
George, who had arthroscopic knee and ankle surgery earlier in the offseason, attended three of the teams mini-camp workouts earlier this month, but has not been cleared to participate fully.
For what its worth, Adams was also quick to say the team was ready to use Chris Brown as its primary running back if George was not on the roster.
In fact, during a meeting with head coach Jeff Fisher earlier this year, George was told the team wanted to use Brown, a 2003 draft pick, far more this season even if George remained with the team.
Brown missed virtually all of training camp last year as well as some time during the season with a hamstring injury.
"Chris looked pretty good, I thought, in two playoff games," Adams said. "If hes over his injury -- and I think he is -- he could move into the spot. That wasnt our intention. Our intention was to get Eddie back, but we made our offer, they said no, so I dont see that happening."
George rushed for 1,031 yards in 03, but only two 100-yard games in 2003, and his 3.3-yard average per carry was the second-lowest of his career. George has rushed for 1,000 yards or more in eight of his nine seasons, but he hasnt averaged more 3.5 yards per carry since the 2000 season.
However, George was very effective in the Titans Jan. 3 Wild Card playoff win over the Ravens and still clearly has the support of teammates.
They are going to go to the 12th hour on this, but I have faith its going to get worked out, Mason said last weekend.
