How much time does all this take?

The answer to this question depends in large part on just how competitive your league is and how much you want to "master" the game. But, generally speaking, you'll at least want to skim the NFL news once or twice per week to see if any of your players are injured, about to lose their job, etc. You will also need to go in and select a starting lineup once each week some time prior to kickoff of the first NFL game.

In the simplest leagues you can spend as little as 5-10 minutes per week on your team, while in highly competitive leagues you can spend hours scanning the services like the FootballDieHards.com, making trade proposals and speculating as to how your players will perform in the coming week.

In Baltimore. ... The shoulder injury that could shelve Anthony Wright for at least the first month of the season has opened the door for Kerry Collins.

Wright will undergo surgery on his right (throwing) shoulder as soon as today and, in the worst-case scenario, could be sidelined for the entire season.

And according to Baltimore Sun staffer Jamison Hensley, this development has prompted the Ravens to begin their pursuit of Collins, the former New York Giants starter and the top quarterback on the NFL free-agent market.

Ravens officials confirmed they had spoken with Collins agent yesterday but set no timetable on signing another backup. Many league observers consider Collins a long shot for the Ravens because they believe he eventually will sign with the Oakland Raiders.

Hensley went on to suggest that Kordell Stewart, Couch and Kurt Warner might also be of interest to the team.

However, the Ravens sign, he will have to agree to a couple of terms: a contract for the veteran minimum (because the team has tied up its backup money in Wright) and a backup-only role.

"Its very clear cut: Kyle Boller is the starter, period," head coach Brian Billick said. "No one is going to come in and compete."

The Ravens believed they had their quarterback situation set after re-signing Wright this offseason to a two-year contract worth $3 million (which includes a $1.5 million
