Asked if he had talked to Holmes this week, Vermeil said, "I havent talked to Priest but I understand hell be here Thursday. Thats what I was told."
Six other starters or starting candidates either were withheld from practice or limited in their participation, with star tight end Tony Gonzalez being chief among them.
"Its better to be cautious and play it safe then regret pushing him too hard," Vermeil explained. "Were supposed to get another read on it soon."
Asked if there were any long-term concerns regarding the injury, the coach said: "No, not really. Its just that stress fractures can be a pain in the neck. It is healing properly and the last read from the MRI indicated it was making progress."
Asked about positives following initial workouts, Vermeil singled out quarterback Trent Green.
"You know whats real impressive?" the coach said. "Trent. How sharp he is. Course weve been in this scheme here for four years now. Hes just so sharp throwing the ball its amazing. ..."

In Tampa Bay. ... As Tampa Tribune staffer Katherine Smith framed it: "A league commitment prevented Keenan McCardell from attending the Bucs first round of voluntary workouts in April.
"Not feeling appreciated kept him from the second round that began Tuesday."
McCardell was noticeably absent from team headquarters and isnt expected to attend the remaining workouts, which conclude Thursday.
"Obviously, anytime a really good player is not here, youre concerned," head coach Jon Gruden said. "Were confident that this will all resolve itself."
At issue is McCardells contract. The 13-year veteran has two years remaining on a deal that will pay him $2.5 million this year and $2.75 million in 2005.
