coaches are ecstatic over the offseason performance of receiver Donte Stallworth. A No. 1 pick in 2002, Stallworth has suffered too many nagging injuries to his legs.
The Saints say Stallworth has worked like a fiend since the end of last season. He changed his diet, reduced his body fat to less than eight percent, has gotten stronger and has learned new stretching techniques to help him avoid the leg injuries.
"I told him the other day I was proud of him," head coach Jim Haslett said. "Hes starting to take care of his body and learning what it takes to be a pro. If he keeps it up, hes going to have a big year. ..."
In Chicago. ... The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports that wide receiver Justin Gage has vaulted, at least temporarily, to a starting spot in the Bears offense. Gage, a fifth-round selection in 2003, leapt over former first-round pick David Terrell, whose dropped passes could make him a cap casualty after June 1.
Gage is one of seven new starters on Chicagos unofficial depth chart since the hiring of Lovie Smith as head coach. ...
In Tampa Bay. ... Boston Globe staffer Nick Cafardo advised readers Sunday that second-year quarterback Chris Simms, who is improving in leaps and bounds at offseason workouts, will be a player to watch in training camp this summer.
Also according to Cafardo, team officials love former LSU receiver Michael Clayton. Bucs speed coach Mike Morris says the newcomer "has outstanding football speed. Hes a big, strong, tough kid. Im really looking forward to working with him."
People are already comparing Clayton to former Buc Keyshawn Johnson. Morris said, "Hes a faster Keyshawn. ..."
In New York. ... The Giants signed veteran free-agent place-kicker Bill Gramatica last Friday, giving Matt Bryant a little more competition for training camp.
