How much time does all this take?

The answer to this question depends in large part on just how competitive your league is and how much you want to "master" the game. But, generally speaking, you'll at least want to skim the NFL news once or twice per week to see if any of your players are injured, about to lose their job, etc. You will also need to go in and select a starting lineup once each week some time prior to kickoff of the first NFL game.

In the simplest leagues you can spend as little as 5-10 minutes per week on your team, while in highly competitive leagues you can spend hours scanning the services like the FootballDieHards.com, making trade proposals and speculating as to how your players will perform in the coming week.

he gained was priceless.

"Just the calmness," head coach Brian Billick said. "Not that he wasnt calm before, but think about where he was a year ago and what was going through his mind. Thats why to a large degree, we did what we did last year, starting the season with him at Pittsburgh. I think well see a return on the investment."

As Ginsburg noted, Boller didnt have to be great for the Ravens to win in 2003 because the offense was built around 2,000-yard rusher Jamal Lewis. But the opposition began keying on the punishing running back, which meant the Ravens had to improve the passing game.

They obtained Kevin Johnson in a trade last month and drafted speedy wideout Devard Darling. Now its up to Boller to get the wideouts the ball.

"Me and Kyle have been out on the field during the offseason, and he looked great out there today," Javin Hunter said. "He throws the ball hard; hes got a great arm. Hes accurate, too, so hes got the whole package."

Boller said it took him several months before he finally was able to grasp the speed of the NFL and the intricacies of the Ravens offense. But by the time that happened, he hurt his knee in a game against the Rams on Nov. 9.

"I felt like toward the St. Louis game I was getting over the hump," he said. "I kind of got shot down with that injury, but comparing myself from the Pittsburgh game to the St. Louis game, it was a drastic difference."

Now its time to build on that experience. Former Giants coach Jim Fassel has lent a hand in his role as senior consultant, focusing much of his attention on helping Boller develop.

"Hes taught me a lot so far, a lot of things that kind of got away from me during the rookie year," Boller said. "Last year I was real tight in the pocket and the ball was up real high. I wasnt really moving fluid. It didnt look good. Im trying to relax a little bit more. ..."

In New Orleans. ... According to Houston Chronicle insider John McClain,
