How much time does all this take?

The answer to this question depends in large part on just how competitive your league is and how much you want to "master" the game. But, generally speaking, you'll at least want to skim the NFL news once or twice per week to see if any of your players are injured, about to lose their job, etc. You will also need to go in and select a starting lineup once each week some time prior to kickoff of the first NFL game.

In the simplest leagues you can spend as little as 5-10 minutes per week on your team, while in highly competitive leagues you can spend hours scanning the services like the FootballDieHards.com, making trade proposals and speculating as to how your players will perform in the coming week.

Hambrick was released by the Dallas Cowboys on Thursday, a move that likely clears the way for top draft pick Julius Jones to be the starting running back.

Hambrick was given the opportunity to replace NFL career rushing leader Emmitt Smith last season, but averaged just 3.5 yards per carry. He had 972 yards, which ranked 19th in the NFL, while starting all 16 regular-season games.

Dallas took Jones from Notre Dame with their first pick, the 43rd overall, in last months NFL draft. No running backs had been chosen when the Cowboys had their first pick, but they traded down and bypassed several running back prospects. Jones was the fifth running back drafted.

After drafting Jones, head coach Bill Parcells acknowledged that the Cowboys likely would make a move with Hambrick. The four-year running back was released after the team was apparently unable to trade him.

"I told Troy I wanted to be fair with him," Parcells told DallasCowboys.com staff writer Nick Eatman two weeks ago. "I had a meeting with Troy. I told him if we drafted a front-line runner then we might consider doing something with him. He knew that in advance. We sat down and talked about it.

"I told him also if I could find a spot that is better for him then we would do that. We got to a point where we decided not to do it then I go by what I see how he performs when he comes in. Troys been in all season. Hes been working pretty good, to his credit. Hes got to do that. He knows that. So that would just be down the road."

However, ESPN.com insider Len Pasquarelli suggested this afternoon that Hambricks absence from the teams offseason conditioning program this week likely hastened his departure.

Pasquarelli further noted that Hambrick told agent Jordan Woy he no longer felt part of the Dallas organization. In a Thursday morning phone call to team officials, Woy informed them of his clients sentiments.

"Whether (his feelings) were real or perceived,
