Craig added that Bennett is down 5 pounds to 205, thanks to a workout regimen that started in January.
Bennett wanted to qualify for the Olympics in the 100-meter dash but changed his mind when the Vikings hired Kurtis Shultz as head strength and conditioning coach and Mark Ellis, Bennetts former personal trainer, as Shultzs assistant.
"I wasnt going to actually go to the Olympics, but I wanted to qualify just because you always wonder whether youve lost a step," said Bennett, a former Big Ten sprint champion at Wisconsin. "I think it would have only taken me three or four meets to qualify in the 100. All you have to do is run a 10.01. I know I can do that."
After rushing for 447 yards on only 90 carries last season, Bennett thinks he has returned to his 2002 form when he ran for 1,296 yards and a 5.1-yard average.
"Bennett looks fantastic," Tice said. "I almost caught myself just now saying he looks as good as Robert Smith in his prime. But I dont want to go there yet because Robert was a heck of a player. ...
