How much time does all this take?

The answer to this question depends in large part on just how competitive your league is and how much you want to "master" the game. But, generally speaking, you'll at least want to skim the NFL news once or twice per week to see if any of your players are injured, about to lose their job, etc. You will also need to go in and select a starting lineup once each week some time prior to kickoff of the first NFL game.

In the simplest leagues you can spend as little as 5-10 minutes per week on your team, while in highly competitive leagues you can spend hours scanning the services like the FootballDieHards.com, making trade proposals and speculating as to how your players will perform in the coming week.

and they work out for about two hours. Last week, he added meetings to the schedule.

As Best framed it: "True to his reputation as a stern, all-business disciplinarian, he has changed much in and around the locker room."

Among the changes:

  • No more food in the locker room.

  • Televisions have been removed from the trainers room and weight room.

  • All players are required to wear blue T-shirts and gray shorts for workouts.

  • No more pictures of individual players on the locker-room walls.

  • No more three-day weekends during the offseason program.

  • No unexcused tardiness and absences.

Also gone are the reporters who used to have daily access to players in the offseason. Now they are invited once a week. And for the first time in Giants history, they will be barred from most of practice during the season and barred from interviewing assistant coaches outside severely limited periods.

Best added: "Coughlin believes in hardening his team with heavy work in full pads. Even over the next two days, in a no-pads introductory camp, he will test the players toughness."

Coughlin said he would "apply the overload principle. We will give them all kinds of information in a very short amount of time and see what kind of poise and capacity to retain information they have. Well see how well they participate in meetings, see how well they can handle the fatigue, practicing twice for two days and getting that night meeting and how much they can retain the next day."

According to Glazer, the Giants expected some unrest after a man was brought in to clean up a 4-12 mess. And Coughlins hard-nosed style is sure to lead to
