Drawing Fire','As SportsLine.com senior writer Jay Glazer initially reported it: "The New York Giants got just what they want -- a coach feared and revered for his strict and stringent ways. But the Giants now have something that they dont want -- an investigation into whether the new program is too strict."
According to Glazer, the NFL Management Council and NFL Players Associating are conducting a joint investigation into the Giants offseason program under new head coach Tom Coughlin after players complained to the union.
"Numerous Giants have informed my office of activities in the offseason that the players believe violate the rules," NFLPA executive director Gene Upshaw told Glazer. "Nothing is mandatory for veterans in the offseason except for one mini-camp.
"If I get one guy complain, youd listen, but when several players start complaining to my office, then Ive got a problem. We are investigating, we have a right to ask for this information, but all were trying to see is if there has been a violation of rules."
The Management Council and NFLPA are looking for violations under the NFLs collective bargaining agreement. At question is what is mandatory and if the current program demands that players do more than what is laid out in the CBA.
Giants officials insist neither Coughlin nor any part of his program is in violation of any offseason rules. In fact, they reviewed everything in-house to see if there was something that could even be misconstrued as a problem, but they said they couldnt find anything that could even be judged a violation.
This is the first time the Giants have ever been accused of such a violation.
But as New York Newsday staffer Neil Best put it this morning, "Coughlin clearly has been pushing the envelope."
Under predecessor Jim Fassel, players worked out about 45 minutes a day Monday through Thursday. Coughlin gives them Wednesdays off and has them in on Fridays -- eliminating cherished long weekends --
