Hearst started 12 games for the 49ers last season and had his best game in a 24-7 win against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, rushing 20 times for 117 yards and a touchdown.
Hearst has played nine years in the league, but sat out the 1999 and 2000 seasons because of severe ankle problems.
Returning in 2001, Hearst earned the Comeback Player of the Year award for starting all 16 games and rushing for a career-high 1,206 yards. It was the second time Hearst won the award; he also did it in 1995 (with the Arizona Cardinals) after missing most of the 1994 season because he struggled in his return from a knee injury.
Its that injury history and Hearsts age that will likely limit him to either a one- or two-year deal if opts to sign with Detroit.
The Lions are also expected to bring in former Pittsburgh Steelers running back Amos Zereoue, who was released after Pittsburgh acquired Staley.
