Running back Garrison Hearst was expected to arrive in Detroit Sunday night and will visit the Lions today. Kowalski added: "if the situation and the price are right, he might sign a contract."
At 33, Hearst will be a short-term solution to Detroits running back woes. The Lions brought in Duce Staley for a visit last week, but Staley signed with the Pittsburgh Steelers, partly because the Lions told Staley hed have to share playing time with Artose Pinner, last years fourth-round draft pick.
Head coach Steve Mariucci, who coached Hearst during their days with the San Francisco 49ers, prefers a running back-by-committee system rather than having one player carry the entire load. Mariucci believes the rotation, with the addition of a pass-catching fullback, makes it more difficult for teams to defend them.
