The team has talked directly to the Chargers and to Bostons agent, and a deal could be finalized by Monday.
As for Boston, several NFL sources indicated that the Dolphins are the front-runner among a group of teams that have expressed interest. The main reason: Boston wants to be reunited with Dolphins receivers coach Jerry Sullivan, who worked with Boston in Arizona and helped him reach the Pro Bowl in 2001.
Besides Miami, Tampa Bay, Oakland, San Francisco and Baltimore have reportedly inquired about him. However, ESPN.com insider Len Pasquarelli reports the Bucs are no longer interested in Boston and may instead sign Antonio Freeman to a "modest" contract.
Meanwhile, the Dolphins are carefully considering what type of contract to give Boston, who is guaranteed $6.9 million over the next two years. The payment of that money varies depending on whether an option bonus is exercised Monday by the Chargers or a new team.
The reason for the careful contract talks with agent Mitch Frankel is that Boston has a number of off-field issues -- including a shouting match last season with a San Diego coach that resulted in a one-game suspension. Boston also was criticized by Chargers teammates for his sometimes lackadaisical work ethic.
Bostons departure from San Diego comes only one year after being the teams prized free agent signing from 2003.
