signed a one-year contract with the Detroit Lions on Wednesday. The unrestricted free agent will be reunited with Steve Mariucci, who coached Streets in San Francisco.
"Hes familiar with Steve and his system," Lions president Matt Millen said. "Hes had success. He upgrades us and gives us a big kid who runs well. Hes healthy and were excited to get him."
In five seasons with the 49ers, Streets, who played college football at Michigan and made no secret of his desire to return to the Midwest, had 168 receptions for 2,008 yards and 13 touchdowns.
He likely will start alongside Charles Rogers -- who had an injury-shortened rookie season last year -- and Az-Zahir Hakim.
And as Detroit Free Press sports writer Curt Sylvester noted this morning, the teams receiving corps was in need of significant help.
In addition to last weeks release of veteran starter Bill Schroeder, Rogers is coming off a broken collarbone that cost him the final 11 games of the season; Hakim was sub-par recovering from a hip injury in 2002; and Scotty Anderson is coming off a knee injury and has yet to prove himself as a dependable receiver.
Streets started all 16 games for San Francisco last year despite a season-long struggle with tendinitis. By the end of last season, the problem was limiting him to one practice per week and rookie Brandon Lloyd was cutting into his playing time.
He still finished the 2003 campaign with 47 catches for 595 yards and seven TDs. In 2002, he had 72 receptions for 756 yards and five TDs.
Streets reportedly underwent a relatively simple procedure at the Cleveland Clinic to remove the calcium deposits in his knees that were responsible for last years problems and will be ready to play this fall.
