Meanwhile, in San Diego. ... As reluctant as hes been to go into specifics, Chargers general manager A.J. Smith has made no secret of the fact Boston is available.
"Anybody can call us and well see how it goes," Smith, who hasnt heard from another team. "Right now he is with the Chargers."
But apparently not for long.
The Chargers are expected to trade or cut Boston before March 15 when a $3 million bonus is due him. The Dolphins can trade for Boston and then restructure the remaining portion of a $47 million deal he signed with San Diego last season.
As North County Times beat man Jay Paris noted this morning, the Chargers were ecstatic after acquiring the muscular Boston during last years free-agency period. He led the Chargers with seven touchdown receptions and 880 yards on 70 catches, but was also suspended without pay for the Sept. 28 game in Oakland after a run-in with strength and conditioning coach Dave Redding, and the flaunting of other team rules.
Smith declined to elaborate on what led the team to sour on Boston.
"I would never say that," Smith said. "We are constantly doing things in our business that we dont discuss. This is just what we are doing and were seeing if anyone is interested, and if we like what they offer, well react to it. But right now, David Boston is with us."
According to San Diego Union-Tribune staffer Jim Trotter, Boston spoke calmly and evenly after receiving the news. His words were not coated with disappointment or excitement, only a professional resignation that such things happen in the NFL.
"Im not sure how it got to this point," he told Trotter by phone from Arizona, where he is conducting his offseason training. "Right now, Im just waiting for things to unfold. I dont know too much. I just kind of heard that theres a possibility I could be traded."
Not that he expected the move.
