How much time does all this take?

The answer to this question depends in large part on just how competitive your league is and how much you want to "master" the game. But, generally speaking, you'll at least want to skim the NFL news once or twice per week to see if any of your players are injured, about to lose their job, etc. You will also need to go in and select a starting lineup once each week some time prior to kickoff of the first NFL game.

In the simplest leagues you can spend as little as 5-10 minutes per week on your team, while in highly competitive leagues you can spend hours scanning the services like the FootballDieHards.com, making trade proposals and speculating as to how your players will perform in the coming week.

call."

Meanwhile, in San Diego. ... As reluctant as hes been to go into specifics, Chargers general manager A.J. Smith has made no secret of the fact Boston is available.

"Anybody can call us and well see how it goes," Smith, who hasnt heard from another team. "Right now he is with the Chargers."

But apparently not for long.

The Chargers are expected to trade or cut Boston before March 15 when a $3 million bonus is due him. The Dolphins can trade for Boston and then restructure the remaining portion of a $47 million deal he signed with San Diego last season.

As North County Times beat man Jay Paris noted this morning, the Chargers were ecstatic after acquiring the muscular Boston during last years free-agency period. He led the Chargers with seven touchdown receptions and 880 yards on 70 catches, but was also suspended without pay for the Sept. 28 game in Oakland after a run-in with strength and conditioning coach Dave Redding, and the flaunting of other team rules.

Smith declined to elaborate on what led the team to sour on Boston.

"I would never say that," Smith said. "We are constantly doing things in our business that we dont discuss. This is just what we are doing and were seeing if anyone is interested, and if we like what they offer, well react to it. But right now, David Boston is with us."

According to San Diego Union-Tribune staffer Jim Trotter, Boston spoke calmly and evenly after receiving the news. His words were not coated with disappointment or excitement, only a professional resignation that such things happen in the NFL.

"Im not sure how it got to this point," he told Trotter by phone from Arizona, where he is conducting his offseason training. "Right now, Im just waiting for things to unfold. I dont know too much. I just kind of heard that theres a possibility I could be traded."

Not that he expected the move.

"It is kind of surprising whats happening," Boston said of the impending separation. "I like [receivers] coach
