Garner had an enormous season, recording 1,903 combined yards, averaging 5.3 yards per carry and scoring 11 touchdowns. His rushing average, touchdowns, receptions (91) and receiving yards (941) all marked career highs, and he led all NFL backs in receiving. The Raiders advanced to the Super Bowl that season, losing to Grudens Buccaneers.
Last season, knee and back injuries, plus a one-game Raiders suspension, limited Garner, who underwent surgery last Friday to repair a torn meniscus in his left knee, to 14 games and nine starts. Though he was limited to his lowest rushing (553 yards) and receiving (386 yards) totals in five years, Garner still averaged 4.6 yards per tote and scored four touchdowns.
Garners signing addresses an offseason priority, as the Bucs offensive backfield took an immediate hit in free agency. Tailback Thomas Jones, the starter for the last month of 2003, signed with Chicago an hour after becoming a free agent. Reserve Aaron Stecker subsequently left for New Orleans.
Those defections left Michael Pittman and Mike Alstott as the only backs on the Bucs roster with starting experience in Grudens system.
But Alstott, the teams second all-time leading rusher, is recovering from neck surgery and Pittmans future with the team is uncertain while he awaits a March 29 trial on felony aggravated assault charges stemming from an arrest in May.

Alstott told Tampa Tribune staff writer Katherine Smith last Wednesday that he has been cleared to play, only four months after neck surgery to repair two herniated discs.
"I feel like the old Mike," said Alstott, who missed 12 games last season with the injury. "I dont feel like it ever happened."
Alstott has been keeping Gruden-like hours this offseason. He wakes up at 5 a.m. and arrives at team headquarters around 5:30. For the next three hours, the six-time Pro Bowl fullback runs through a variety of drills.
