According to Washington Post staff writer Nunyo Demasio, the Redskins resumed their free agent shopping Saturday night, agreeing in principle to a multi-year contract with tight end Walter Rasby.
Rasby, who played for New Orleans last season, visited the Houston Texans on Friday and met with head coach Dom Capers staff after receiving an offer from the Redskins. He decided late last night to return to Washington, where he played in 2001 and 2002. Terms of his contract were unavailable.
The Texans viewed Rasby as a third tight end behind Billy Miller and Bennie Joppru. In Washington, Rasby likely will have a prominent role because of new head coach Joe Gibbs need for a blocking tight end.
As Demasio noted, former coach Steve Spurrier deemed the tight end expendable last offseason because pass-catching wasnt his forte. Gibbs believes that one significant change since his last Redskins stint is the need for a tight end with blocking prowess
