Manning, the NFLs co-Most Valuable Player this past season, reached the end of his previous contract after this past season. The Colts last week had designated him their exclusive franchise player, thereby ensuring he would be with the team no matter the outcome of negotiations.

By reaching a deal before March 17, the Colts can remove the exclusive franchise tag they placed on the leagues co-MVP last week. The structure of the deal helps the Colts by dropping Mannings cap number for the 2004 season from $18.4 million to $8.3 million.
The signing bonus is $14 million more than the previous high, paid a year-and-a-half ago to Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Donovan McNabb.
