How much time does all this take?

The answer to this question depends in large part on just how competitive your league is and how much you want to "master" the game. But, generally speaking, you'll at least want to skim the NFL news once or twice per week to see if any of your players are injured, about to lose their job, etc. You will also need to go in and select a starting lineup once each week some time prior to kickoff of the first NFL game.

In the simplest leagues you can spend as little as 5-10 minutes per week on your team, while in highly competitive leagues you can spend hours scanning the services like the FootballDieHards.com, making trade proposals and speculating as to how your players will perform in the coming week.

The agreement came a day before the beginning of the NFLs league year. The NFLs $80.6 million salary cap goes into effect Wednesday.

By reaching a deal before March 17, the Colts can remove the exclusive franchise tag they placed on the leagues co-MVP last week. The structure of the deal helps the Colts by dropping Mannings cap number for the 2004 season from $18.4 million to $8.3 million.

The signing bonus is $14 million more than the previous high, paid a year-and-a-half ago to Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Donovan McNabb.

In the best season of his six-year NFL career, Manning threw for 4,267 yards and 29 touchdowns with just 10 interceptions while leading the Colts to the AFC Championship Game.','3/2/2004 11:21:41 AM','11:21:41 AM','Tuesday'4645,2004,1009 6571,5,75,'Roundup: Smith Re-Signs; Garcia Leaving; Bettis Staying','As initially reported by the Associated Press, Steve Smith agreed to a five-year contract extension with the Carolina Panthers on Monday after leading the NFC champions in receiving last season.

Contract details were not disclosed, but Smiths agent Derrick Fox told the AP the deal includes a team option for a sixth season.

The Panthers had made re-signing Smith a top priority after a 32-29 loss to the New England Patriots in the Super Bowl. He could have become a restricted free agent.

Smith wasnt always a priority.

He made the Pro Bowl as a return man as a rookie, but wouldnt settle for being pigeonholed in that role simply because at 5-foot-9 and 185 pounds he was considered too small to play receiver.

After lobbying for a shot at as a starter, he got it in 2002. But he had
