the Eagles have agreed to trade the veteran receiver to the Redskins in exchange for a fifth-round pick in the 2005 draft.
Citing an unnamed Redskins source, Brookover noted the deal cannot be completed until 4 p.m. (eastern time) today because the Redskins need to clear some space from their salary cap.
With Owens, Todd Pinkston and Freddie Mitchell all ahead of Thrash on the depth chart, it was obvious he had little chance to remain with the Eagles.
This will mark the second time in Thrashs career he has gone from the Eagles to the Redskins. After being signed by the Eagles as an undrafted free agent in 1997, he was released in training camp and signed by the Redskins. He played four seasons with Washington before signing a five-year deal worth $8.9 million as a free agent in 2001.
Meanwhile. ...
McNabb said he did not lobby head coach Andy Reid on Owens behalf. He just hoped the team would make the right moves to put the Eagles back on track in the NFC East and in the conference.
"Im excited about that, the rest of the receiving corps should be excited about that, the offense should be excited about that, that they have a guy who, when the ball is in his hands, you never know what can happen," said McNabb. "Hes a big play waiting to happen."
McNabb said he would work with Owens in the teams post-draft mini-camp, the June passing game and in training camp. There will also be the opportunity to become bonded further when and if the two work out during the offseason in Arizona, McNabbs second training home, or Atlanta, Owens home.
Either way, the former Syracuse star cant wait to get started.
"I know about his work ethic and the way he approaches games," McNabb said. "I know in tough situations, he has the same attitude like me; he wants the ball in his hands and the opportunity to change the game around.
"When you have a group of guys that have the same mentality, it is sort of contagious and it spreads among not only guys on your side of the ball, but the whole team."
