How high?
Washington had five H-backs or tight ends participating in the teams first mini-camp this week: Byron Chamberlain, Mike Sellers, Walter Rasby, Robert Royal and Kevin Ware.
Gibbs uses the tight end almost exclusively as an extra blocker on the offensive line, a role that seems to fit both Rasby and Royal. The H-back, meanwhile, is asked to do any number of things from any number of locations on the field.
"Hes got to be a blocker, hes got to be a pass protector and hes got to be able to run routes," offensive coordinator Don Breaux said. "Its a unique position, really."
The H-back can line up in the backfield, on the line or -- as is often the case -- is put into motion. On one play, he may be asked to serve as lead blocker for tailback Clinton Portis. The next, he may be sprinting 15 yards downfield to catch a pass.
The Redskins believe they have players who fit that mold -- especially in Chamberlain and Sellers, both of whom have excelled as H-backs in the past. ...
Also in Washington. ... Portis now says he wont pay safety Ifeanyi Ohalete for the chance to wear No. 26, Portis old number in Denver.
According to Washington Post staffer Nunyo Demasio, Portis requested a boxing match, with the winner getting the number. Ohalete -- who also rebuffed Chad Morton last year -- declined. ...
In San Francisco. ... The 49ers have all but ruled out adding a veteran quarterback as a backup to inexperienced starter Tim Rattay.
Rattay, elevated to starter after Garcia was released March 2 in a salary-cap move, has gone 2-1 in three starts. Neither Ken Dorsey nor Brandon Doman has NFL playing experience, but both have potential, coaches believe.
